Community Teatowels Each child from the Kowhai community drew a self-portrait which has been reduced in size, combined and made into a teatowel. These are available to order and purchase. The sample is on display in Mrs Herring’s area on the whiteboard. Bottles for the school fete The school fete is fast approaching and the Kowhai Team are running the ‘Mystery Bottle’ stall. We are still collecting donations of bottles so we can wrap them and be organised for 2 April. Ideas include bottles of, beverages, body lotion, a bottle filled with a gift voucher or lollies. Please bring any bottles to your child’s pod teacher. Any extra donations will also be more than welcome. The more that we have, the more money that the school receives to benefit your child(ren). Mathletics This is all set up and ready to be used! Your child will have the same log in and password as last year. If you have any questions or concerns, please approach your child’s pod teacher. Library Last week it was communicated that children from Miss Simons, Mrs Herring and Miss Stuart’s pods had Thursday as their library day. This has changed since then and is now Wednesday. Miss Allchurch, Mrs Buckenham and Mrs Sands’ pods will still visit the library on Tuesday. Please ensure that library books are in your child’s reading packets on their day. Toys A gentle reminder that ALL personal toys, are not to be brought to school. Parent Help Thank you to those parents who have given up their time to help out in our community. Please remember to ‘sign in’ at the office before coming to the classroom. Head lice and Strep throat We have had cases of both head lice and strep throat in our community. Please check your child’s hair in case they have been infected with head lice. Treatment can be purchased from a chemist or can be ‘Googled’ online! Oxfam Trailwalker This weekend, Miss Allchurch (Nicole) is participating in the 100km walk as part of a four-person team to raise money for Oxfam. We wish her all the best and let’s hope the weather holds out for them! Have a lovely weekend and we will see you all again on Monday! Kia ora koutou Kowhai parents, It's been another busy week in the Kowhai community and we have lots of tired children (and adults!) at the end of the week. This week Miss Allchurch (Nicole) and Miss Simons (Louise) have been at a Restorative Justice course for three days, as part of our school-wide Professional Development for 2017. We are grateful to Mrs Stott and Mrs Thomson for teaching in their absence, and look forward to welcoming Nicole and Louise back next week. Swimming It looks like the best of the weather is behind us, and we have certainly noticed much cooler temperatures overnight this week. With this in mind, we have decided to finish our swimming programme. Any 'lost' towels, goggles or togs can be retrieved from our class lost property box, and we will spread this out next Friday afternoon for one final time. Following this time, any unclaimed items will be moved to the school lost property box (found in the green bin in Ti Kouka). Library As noted last week, our library times have been confirmed now that swimming has finished. If your child is in Miss Allchurch's, Mrs Buckenham's or Mrs Sands' pod group, they will visit the library on a Tuesday afternoon. If your child is in Mrs Herring's, Miss Simons' or Miss Stuart's pod group, they will visit the library on a Thursday afternoon. Please return your child's library books in their reading packet on the day they are due to visit the library. Can you help? We'd love some more play dough, please! If you are able to help us out by making a batch (or two) in the weekend, please comment below. Thanks in advance! We'd also love any left over boxes you might have from grocery items (for construction). Any size or shape would be great! And we'd love any plastic jars or containers (with lids) that could be repurposed to make musical instruments. You may have heard about our band ('25 minutes to hometime'). We've been working hard to make our own instruments, write our own songs and even managed time for a couple of world tours (around the playground). We've exhausted our supply of 'stuff to turn into instruments', but not our enthusiasm! As always, if you'd like to come and join the fun, you're more than welcome! Have a chat to your child's pod teacher to find out more. School fete The school fete is approaching rapidly and looks to be a great event. There are some fantastic stalls and entertainment planned, and the Fete Committee has been working very hard behind the scenes. Each learning community has been asked to organise a stall to contribute to the fundraising. In the Kowhai Community we thought we would hold a 'Mystery Bottle' stall. We need your help with this, please! We're asking each Kowhai family to donate a bottle of something (beverages, body lotion, a bottle filled with a gift voucher or lollies). The kowhai children will then wrap and decorate these bottles and we'll sell them back to you (or your friends and family) at the fete! Please send your bottle donations along to school next week. If you have any fancy wrapping paper, ribbons or bows that you would also like to donate, that would be fantastic. Finally, if you and your child are able to help us out on the day with selling our magnificent bottles, please comment below. Thanks Our heartfelt thanks to Cam for his on-going Wednesday 'Tool Time' sessions. The children have an absolute blast at the woodwork table making all sorts of amazing creations. We are exceptionally grateful to Cam for organising a donation of tools from Mitre 10 for the children to use. Mitre 10 have also donated some wood for a wood-working table, which Cam and Andrew are currently working on. We'll include some more photos on our blog of the tools 'in action' next week (watch this space!) Thanks Cam! Have a great weekend everyone - winter sports are fast approaching! See you all on Monday
Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We have had an awesome day today! We took part in the official opening ceremony for our new building and enjoyed listening to Mrs Jackson and all of the other special guests. Due to this special event not all children have a reading book today. This week we have been learning about volcanoes, you will find a copy of “The Lava Song” in poetry books. If your child doesn’t have a copy please see their Pod teacher. As part of the upcoming West Melton Country Fete the Kowhai Team will be running a mystery bottle stall. Please drop a bottle of something to your child’s pod teacher by Friday 17th March (eg chocolate sauce, shower gel, or you could put a voucher in an empty bottle). We will wrap the bottles but would appreciate any donations of paper for this. We are also looking for volunteers to help us run the stall at the fete, please let your child’s Pod teacher know if you can help. Thank you for your support. Due to the inclement weather we will only go swimming if it is warm. We will make the decision on the day so please continue to send togs to school on Tuesday and Thursday. We will probably finish swimming in the next couple of weeks. Following this our afternoon programmes including inquiry will begin in earnest. We have now confirmed our library days, your child can bring their old books back and select new ones on their Pod’s library day: Tuesday – Pods: Allchurch, Buckenham and Sands Thursday – Pods: Herring, Simons, Stuart Have a great weekend, Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz Kia ora koutou parents and caregivers,
Wow - we all looked very flash this morning in our mufti. Thanks for those of you who have contributed to fund-raising for Oxfam. Miss Allchurch is a member of this team and will be walking 100km in the last weekend of March. We are sure we will hear lots more about this in the coming weeks! This week we are really excited to welcome Jack, Cory and Lexie to our learning community! We know you will have a wonderful time at school. We had a group of visitors from the Cat's Pyjamas visit us on Wednesday morning, and we are looking forward to seeing these children when they start school. Official opening ceremony Next Friday we will celebrate the official opening of our new block. Yesterday we sent home words to the waiata we will be singing at the ceremony. We have also made a blog post about this waiata, so do check under the 'our blog' tab. Powerful connections meeting It was lovely to meet so many of you on Tuesday evening, and we thank you for taking the time to come and meet with us. We have made an entry on our blog about this meeting (under the 'our blog' tab). In response to a question raised at the meeting, we have added another page to this website 'your questions'. These questions were raised at the meeting, and we are working our way through our responses. If your question has not been answered yet, we will get to it soon. We have included a form for you to ask any other questions you may have. If you wish to respond to a particular question, please use the comment function. On Thursday and Friday we have also sent home paper copies of the handouts given out on Tuesday evening. If you have not received a paper copy please see your child's pod teacher. Electronic copies of these handouts are included in the blog post mentioned above. We've just realised that we've forgotten to hand out Seesaw information for parents! Oops! This will come home on Monday. Swimming We will continue to swim for another week or two, depending on the weather. We have noticed a huge improvement in water confidence over the time we have been swimming. Thank you to you all for labelling clothing and togs - our lost property bin is not that full! We will spread out any unclaimed items tomorrow at the end of the day. Headlice A reminder to please check your child's hair, and continue to do so regularly. The chemist (or Dr Google) can advise you on treatment. If your child has long hair please ensure it is tied back securely. Have a fantastic weekend - see you all Monday!
