Kia ora everyone,
Welcome to week four's KIT notice - sorry for the delay... Just a short and sweet one this time! Pink Shirt Day What a fantastic bright colourful day for a good cause! Thank you to all children who jumped on board and wore pink to raise awareness about anti-bullying - it was pink overload! Literacy Information Evening Thank you to those who came to this evening - it was great to see so many Kowhai parents there! The follow-up information will be posted to the blog this week. Court Theatre Presentation This presentation will take place at school on the 1 June and involves a cost of $5 per child. You can pay this via direct credit into your school account. High Frequency Words If your child has recently moved up a colour in reading and you haven't received new sight words with the coloured level information sheet please let your child's pod teacher know. These words are for children to learn to read. They don't need to know how to spell them. Walking Across the Staff Carpark Please don’t walk across the staff carpark - use the footpaths to ensure everyone’s safety. Routines Please remind your child about the morning routines they need to complete when they arrive at school. Children need to hang their bag up, put their reading packet in their pod box, sign their name on their name card and say hello to their pod teacher before playing. We hope you've enjoyed your weekend and are ready for the week ahead! Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz

Hi everyone -
Welcome to a very belated K.I.T. notice for Week 3 - we were just wondering how many people would miss their weekly K.I.T. fix. Turns out, not many of you. ;o) We are sorry for the delay in getting this info to you - thanks for your patience. Inquiry We've been busy investigating creativity and innovation in our inquiry time, and really enjoyed reading the books 'Iggy Peck, architect', 'Rosie Revere, engineer', and 'Ida Twist, scientist'. We've talked lots about the idea that it's good to fail at something as we can learn from our mistakes. We've also talked about identifying problems, and thinking of creative and innovative solutions. This week we were lucky to have Helen (Anna's mum) come to talk to us about being a Civil Engineer (you'll be pleased to know she hasn't had any 'fails' in her building projects). We are busy planning with Tammy (Tegan's mum) to come and talk to us about being a scientist, and we are just looking for an architect to complete the set! If you're an architect, draughtsman, or something to do with designing buildings and would love to share your knowledge with the Kowhai kids, we'd love to hear from you! Email Mrs B - [email protected] - and we'll sort something out! Thanks! Pink shirt day This Friday is Pink shirt day to promote anti-bullying week. All children are invited to wear pink clothing on Friday, and bring a gold coin donation. If your child does not want to wear pink, they will be expected to wear normal school uniform (ie this is not a mufti day). Some helpful hints from those of us with boys - borrow clothing off friendly neighbours with girls, wear something of Mums, wear a pink singlet over your clothing, wear a pink onesie or dye a plain white t-shirt pink for the day. Court theatre presentation This has been promoted in the School newsletter and will be held on June 1. The cost is $5, and we will let you know how to pay this at the end of the week! We're really looking forward to seeing this production, especially with our own school production coming up in Term 3. Communication from school School newsletters are published in Week 3, 6 and 9 of each term. These are emailed to parents, so it is important that the school office has your correct (and current) email address. For other (casual) notices and reminders, make sure you 'like' the school Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/WestMeltonSchool/ And feel free to post any questions on these K.I.T. notices (as comments). Coming up There are a number of parent information evenings coming up - these have been advertised in the school newsletter, via email, on the school Facebook page, and on the school calendar. 23 May - Literacy 29 May - Intermediate 31 May - Digital technologies 7 June - Mathematics Subway / pizza / uniforms All of these things can now be ordered online! For Subway, continue to use the 'Lunch online' website, and for pizza or uniforms, use the West Melton 'shop'. There is a link from the school website (https://shop.tgcl.co.nz/shop/), as well as full information on uniform requirements and a price list. Pizza is available on Tuesday at $2 a slice (this is an annual fundraiser for the Intermediate school trip to Wellington, and is only available for Term 2 and 3). We hope you had a lovely weekend and survived the freezing wind and frosty starts. Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz Kia ora Kowhai parents and caregivers,
This week we welcomed Jack K to our community. We hope you have a great time in the Kowhai Community Jack! We had lots of fun wearing our Hi-viz clothing today, thank you all for supporting Road Safety Week. Cross Country Congratulations to all of our Kowhai Kids who participated in the Cross Country on Tuesday. Children had a great time trying their best and cheering on their friends. Well done to the following children who placed first, second and third in their races: Group 5A Y2 Boys - Luke H, Evan, Sam F Group 5A Y2 Girls - Chane, Neve, Sia Group 7A NE/Y1 Boys - Max W, Robbie, Max C Group 7A NE/Y1 Girls - Millie, Luci, Indy Group 8A NE/Y1 Boys - Charlie S, Riva, Cameron Group 8B NE - Y1 Girls - Tayla, Paige, Chloe Sandpit It has been awesome to see how much enjoyment the children are getting from our new sandpit. It seems it is so exciting that children want to keep playing in it after school. If any of your children (including their brothers or sisters) are playing in the sandpit after school hours please put sandpit toys away again on the shelves by the stairs. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this. Start of School Day Please remember that children are not allowed in the community before 8.20am. Teachers use the time before this to prepare for the school day and may not be in the Kowhai community space to supervise children. Parent Help We are looking for some lovely volunteers to take our Early Words programme. This programme helps children to build up a bank of high frequency sight words. We will train you in how the programme works before you start working with children. If you are able to help with this please let your child’s pod teacher know. Thelma, Louise and Natalie would also love some more parent helpers at literacy and numeracy time. If you are able to help out please let one of them know. Inquiry In our inquiry time this week we have continued to look at creativity and innovation. You might like to ask your child about the videos we watched “Ormie the Pig” and “Snowman in a Globe”. They were quite a hit! In the videos characters used innovative ideas to solve their problems. Parent information sessions A reminder of the upcoming evening information sessions. On May 17 it is our Intermediate Open Evening, and on May 23 there is a session about supporting your child in reading and writing. Other sessions this term include Digital Citizenship and maths. Please check with the office if you have not received email information about the Literacy evening. Lost Tegan is missing her new plain navy sweatshirt. Please have a look in your child's bag to check it hasn't come home to your house! Thank you to everyone who looked for Frazer’s sweatshirt, it has been found! Have a lovely weekend; we'll see you all next week! Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie Kia ora Kowhai parents and caregivers,
A warm welcome to Term 2! It's been lovely to see all the children back at school, and to catch up with all the holiday news. We hope you've managed to settle back into school routines with the challenge of colder and darker mornings. Welcome An extra special welcome to Tessa, Larisa, Immy, Emily and Jack H who have started school for the first time this week! And also to Alex H who started school in the last week of Term 1. We hope you have a wonderful time in the Kowhai Community and a great start to your school years. Sunhats Sunhats are not required at school in Term 2 or Term 3, so please store these somewhere safe at home until Term 4. All sunhats were sent home at the end of last term, so if yours hasn't made it home, you may need to check the lost property boxes. As the weather gets cooler you may want to send gloves, a warmer hat and a warmer jacket for your child to wear to and from school, and at break times. If you do this, please ensure everything is clearly named (especially gloves!) as these bulkier items often don't make it into school bags for storage, and are easily misplaced. Please also make sure that all lunchboxes, drink bottles and snack containers are clearly named - there were several at the end of last term which were not claimed. Sandpit Wow! Have you seen our new 'mega' sandpit?! Over the holidays we've had a bit of a make-over in our outdoor area, and we were all super excited to see our sandpit when we came back to school! We're on the scrounge for some buckets, scoopers, spades, anything 'sand-pitty' - if you have things at home that your child has outgrown (or perhaps you no longer have a sandpit?!) we'd really appreciate your kind donations! One of the most amazing (and most used) things in our sandpit is actually several small lengths of PVC piping (in varying diameters). If you have any of this lying around at home, or have a secret source, again, we'd love your donations! Cross Country Next Tuesday is our school-wide cross country. We have been practising very hard this week, and learning to pace ourselves so we can run for long distances without stopping. Some of us have had to work very hard to not be distracted by dandelions or small dogs passing on the footpath! We're really looking forward to showing you our running skills on Tuesday! There have been several emails home with full details about the time and course for Tuesday. Please see your child's pod teacher if you have not received this information, or need more information. Parent information sessions You should have received emails from the office advising you of two up-coming evening information sessions. On Wednesday May 10 there is a session about Learning Support. On May 17 it is our Intermediate Open Evening, and on May 23 there is a session about supporting your child in reading and writing. Other sessions this term include Digital Citizenship and maths. Please check with the office if you have not received email information about the Learning Support or Literacy evenings. Inquiry In our inquiry time this term we are talking about being creative and innovative. You'll hear lots more about this over the term, we're sure! Perhaps over the weekend you could ask your child what the two words mean, and help them to notice instances when they are being creative or innovative. Lost Frazer has been missing his school sweatshirt since Tuesday / Wednesday of this week. It was put in his schoolbag, but may have fallen out and been accidentally 'tidied' by another child. Please have a look in your child's bag to check it hasn't come home to your house! Just to keep you on your toes, the sweatshirt will be named with 'Nash' or 'Ryder'. :o) That's it everyone! Have a great weekend - here's hoping for a mild start to Saturday morning for winter sports. We'll see you all next week! Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz |
