Kia ora koutou Kowhai parents and caregivers!
Wow - the end of week 5! We are already half-way through the term, and there's heaps of things coming up. We hope you have enjoyed the sunshine and warmer temperatures this week - spring is coming. A big 'welcome' to school to Cooper and Ivy who joined the Kowhai Community this week. Inquiry / Production Our inquiry focus for this term is "the arts tell a story", and we are working towards our whole school production in Week 10 of this term. The production will be at Rolleston College on Monday and Tuesday (September 25 and 26) from 7.00 - 9.00pm. There may also be a matinee performance on the Tuesday (to be confirmed). There will be lots more information about ticket prices, what time you need to be there, costumes and props etc closer to the time. We are all busily practising our song (you may get sneak previews of this at home!) and next week we will start on our dances. If you know that your child will not be at school in the final week of term, please let your child's pod teacher know as soon as possible. We're also looking for a few parents who would be able to sew 'costumes' on demand (nothing complicated, don't worry!) If you're available to help out (time, location, details to be confirmed), then please comment below. We're also looking (at this stage) for some off-cuts / remnants of chiffon, organza or other similar 'floaty' fabrics (bright colours, please) - again, please comment below if you have any. Celebration of Learning Next Friday at 9.00 there is a whole school Celebration of Learning in the Wharenui. It is the Kowhai Community's turn to share their learning - we'll be sharing our song for Production! If you are free from 9.00 you are more than welcome to pop along and join in the fun! Illness Even though it's warming up, there are still lots of illnesses around. We've had children away from the Kowhai Community this week with strep throat, fevers, vomiting, chest infections, slapped cheek and other coughs and colds. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home until they are better (and remember that they can not return to school until 48 hours after their last 'episode' of vomiting). Thanks! (While we're thinking about reminders, please remember that teachers are not available to supervise children who arrive at school before 8.20am. As the weather gets warmer, these children will be asked to wait outside the classroom). Lost property On Thursday morning, a pink, white and black hairtie (one of those frilly, curly ribbony ones) was lost in the Kowhai Community. If this has accidentally come home to your house, please return it to school on Monday. (As always - if you are missing any items of clothing, please comment below with the details!) Seesaw We continue to use Seesaw to share our day-to-day learning experiences with you. If you haven't signed up yet, please visit https://app.seesaw.me/s/104-816-398 . The sign up process is very easy (you will need to wait for a Kowhai teacher to approve your sign up), and once you have signed up you can choose to download the iPhone or Android app for your mobile device. Thanks to all those who have recently signed up - the children really love receiving your comments on their work! Have a lovely weekend - we'll see you all next week! Kia ora koutou Kowhai parents and caregivers!
This week we welcomed Ruby N and Charlotte to school. We hope you enjoy your time in the Kowhai Community, learn lots and have fun with your friends. We've had a great week at school. We enjoyed a visit from some of the children and teachers from The Learning Centre on Tuesday afternoon. Today we had a Mufti day to support Cystic Fibrosis - thanks for your support with this! PMP/PE Children enjoyed taking part in “Crazy Catch” and a PMP obstacle course this week. Check out the photos below. We will be putting out PE provocations during our learning through Play (Play based learning) sessions. School Production Our inquiry this term is linked to our school production. We are focusing on learning in the Arts and exploring how we can tell stories through music, dance, drama and art. Preparations are underway for our performance in our School Production on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th September. Save the date! That’s all for this week. Have a great weekend. Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz Kia ora koutou Kowhai parents and caregivers!
We hope you've had a great weekend, and are enjoying the sunshine as much as we are! A big welcome to school to Leo, who joined the Kowhai Community this week. We hope you have a great time at school! We've had a great week at school. The Cat's Pyjamas children came for a visit on Wednesday afternoon, and we all enjoyed catching up with our old friends and teachers. Today was Jump Jam 4 Star Jam and the children looked great in their mufti - thanks for your support! And to cap it off - Brooke and Clay were lucky enough to have their bus tickets drawn out in this morning's Celebration of Learning! Yay! Wood and other treasures Now that the weather is warming up, our wood work table is being used more regularly! If you have access to any (untreated) off-cuts of soft wood, we would love some for our 'creations'! Or if you have any boxes (cereal, muesli bars etc) that we could use for inside 'creations', please send them along to school. Parent help We'd love some help in our learning community, please! If you're free on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday morning at any time between 8.50 - 11.00, please let your child's pod teacher know. No prior experience or special skills required (but we'll make use of them if you tell us you have them!). We'll get you busy reading with children, writing with children, playing literacy games or completing activities related to reading or writing. If you'd prefer to not work with your own child, we can even cater for that! Seesaw Teachers in the Kowhai Community use Seesaw to share snapshots of your child's day and learning. Each child has his or her own online learning journal, and you can receive notifications when new items are added to your child's journal. Many of you have already signed up to Seesaw, and the children love sharing their learning with you, and receiving your feedback and 'likes'. If you would like to sign up to Seesaw so you can access your child's journal, please visit https://app.seesaw.me/s/104-816-398 to sign up. The sign up process is very easy (you will need to wait for a Kowhai teacher to approve your sign up), and once you have signed up you can choose to download the iPhone or Android app for your phone. FoWMS Disco Tonight the Friends of West Melton School are hosting a disco in the Wharenui from 5.00 - 6.30. It's been a while since we've had a disco (our wharenui has been in use as a classroom while our new spaces were being built), and we are all looking forward to a good boogie! The children have been practising their dance moves and we look forward to seeing them all there. Permission slips have been sent home, but there will be more available tonight at the door. Lost sweatshirts, socks, containers... We've heard a few stories this week about missing clothes! If you're missing anything (school related!), feel free to comment below with the details, and we'll see if we can organise a 'reunion' of sorts! Happy holidays to Tegan and Riley - we hope you have a wonderful time on your overseas adventures, and we look forward to seeing lots of photos! Have an awesome weekend! Enjoy your sleep-in, rugby parents - the football, hockey and gym parents are all slightly envious. ;o) Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz Kia ora koutou Kowhai parents and caregivers!
