Kia Ora,
A big welcome to the Kōwhai Community to Juliette, we are so glad you are here. Another busy two weeks in Kōwhai!! We have been working super hard and growing our brains with new information all of the time!! We have tried very hard this week to keep things as calm and normal as possible so that the learners have felt safe and happy. Thank you so much for your support with this and please reach out to any of the teachers if you are struggling or need support. Fete Our fete is fast approaching and we are still in need of bottles to sell. Thanks so much for those who have brought in bottles already they are looking great. If you haven't brought in a bottle or two can you please drop them in on Monday. It could be lollies, toys, sauce, shampoo or anything far more creative (no wine please :)!) We are also still after a few helpers to help us ran the stall during the fete, there is a roster on the window in Kōwhai to fill in. We are thinking that we will sell out fast!! Just a wee reminder about selling the raffle tickets that were sent out last week! Once they are sold the money can be returned to the office and if you are struggling to sell them then return the books to the office as there are people wanting to sell more!! Thank you so much for all of your support with the Fete. The organising committee have been working super hard to pull it altogether and it is shaping up to be an amazing day!! Don't forget to spread the word far and wide and get everybody you know to come along on Sunday 31 March. Kindness Today we celebrated kindness as a school. We wore mufti and took part in an afternoon of school wide activities to promote kindness and love. It was lovely to see everyone working together. Swimming Now that the weather is starting to cool down, the pool temperature is dropping and we have decided to finish our swimming programme. The children will no longer need to bring their togs to school. It has been so lovely to see the children's water confidence during our swimming times and we are looking forward to getting back into the pool in late in Term 4 (weather permitting)! Alphabet books Thank you to those families who have cut out and stuck in all of the alphabet songs into their child's alphabet books! These are super helpful to help children learn their alphabet letters, sounds and words that start with that letter. As a next step it would be great to see some pictures and drawings on the blank page next to the poem of each letter to help reinforce each letter of the alphabet. This will help children associate things that are important to them with the letters of the alphabet. If your child is confident with the names and sounds of the alphabet you could include basic words that the children would like to try and spell on the different letter pages and use it like a dictionary. If you have any questions about these books please feel free to come and see your child's pod teacher!! End of the Day help Sometimes at the end of the day we are super busy trying to get everyone packed up ready for home and we don't get a chance to tidy up our outside area. If you happen to be waiting outside Kōwhai at the end of the day and have a spare moment or two we would really appreciate some help with putting the covers on the sandpits and sweeping up some of the sand. There will be brooms out by the door for you to use (or we would love any donated old brooms!) and it would be greatly appreciated!! Blog On this page there is another section called Discovery Friday where you can have a look at what we have been up to on a Friday. This will not be updated every week but we will try to put up a couple of entries a term! We are also going to put up a page about Literacy and Maths to show you some of the things that we are doing as part of our programme and the reasoning behind it! These will hopefully be active by the end of the term. Communication Because we are sending out our K.I.T. notice fortnightly and school newsletter 3 weekly, some important information may come out by email. Please regularly check your emails so that you have the most up to date information and you can stay informed. If you are not getting emails, please check in with the office to confirm that they have the correct address. By liking the West Melton School Facebook page is another great way to receive regular updates on what is happening

Kia Ora koutou,
Welcome to the Kōwhai Community, to Madison, Oscar, Giorgio and Talia. We are so happy to have you here. We have been very busy in Kōwhai learning how to read our alphabet, books and high frequency words. We have been writing great stories and learning how to write letters and the sounds that they make. Don't forget to get the children to sing our phonics songs to you, they are in the children's alphabet books if you would like to sing along!! Thanks to all of the parents who have cut out the high frequency words and are using these at home. If you are interested in practising the handwriting at home we have included a copy of how we teach the letter formation at the front of the alphabet books. During maths we have been busy learning all about numbers. You might have heard all about the number of the day or about the games we have been playing to help us read, write and add numbers. We have sent home a 100s chart in reading packets, these can be used at home to help children read numbers, look for numbers before and after, and look for patterns. If you would like some ideas to help your child with their number knowledge, feel free to talk to your child's pod teacher. Photos Thanks so much to the families that have already brought in a photo for our gallery. We would really love to see a photo of every child up on our windowsill. You can bring it in already in a frame, or we have spare frames at school. Goal setting forms Today we will send home our completed goal setting forms for your reference. Thank you so much for sharing this time with us. It was so lovely to come together and set goals with the children. Mystery bottles Our school fete is fast approaching and Kōwhai are running the Mystery Bottle stall. We are after your help with this please. We are asking for every child to please send in two bottles (or more if you wish) for us to sell at our stall. Bottles could include - bottles filled with lollies, sauces, shower gels, or something far more creative! We will then wrap them and sell them at the fete! Thanks you, for your help with this. Lost Property We have a blue unnamed sweatshirt and a pair of boys blue togs in our community, if you think they could belong to you, come and see one of the teachers to claim them! Sandpit Toys We are on the hunt for any metal spades for digging in our sandpit, or any old pots and pans for our mud kitchen. If you have any you no longer need at home, we would love to use them! Thanks in advance. Seesaw We are enjoying sharing our learning with you on Seesaw and seeing all of your comments. If you haven't connected to your child's journal you can do so at the following link. How to sign up:
Swimming We are coming to the end of our swimming time. We will aim to swim on Wednesday and Friday (weather permitting). Once the weather cools down we will make a call on whether we continue. Parent Help Thank you, to all of the parents who have offered to help in our community. If you are keen to help there are many ways you can do this. You could join in with play or take a small activity Monday - Thursday mornings or Friday afternoons, read pictures books to small groups of children first thing in the morning or put reading books away any day after 11 am. This doesn't need to be a weekly commitment we are just grateful for any time that you have spare. Science Roadshow On Monday we are looking forward to a visit from the Science Roadshow. We look forward to sharing our learning with you on Seesaw during the visit. Enjoy your weekend and see you all in week 7. Thelma, Sonja, Julia, Jeanette and Jo [email protected] |
