Welcome to our week 11, KIT notice and thank you for a great term. We feel very privileged to be teaching such a wonderful group of children. Furthermore we hope that you all enjoy the extra day tomorrow and the two week holiday break. A chance for us all to re-charge the batteries and have a well-earned rest in preparation for term 2. Take care and if you’re heading out of town, safe travels!.
This week the children have enjoyed the opportunity to:
A special thanks to the parents who have helped out in so many ways this term, from supporting us with:
Reporting to parents Some children had reports sent home with them on Monday. Please remember that if your child didn't get one, they will receive a report at the end of Term 2. There will also be student-led conferences next term. As always, if you have any questions (at any time) about your child's learning, please see their pod teacher in the first instance. Cross Country As previously mentioned, next term we will hold our school-wide cross country. This includes all children in the Kowhai Community, and will be held on Tuesday May 9th (Week 2). We desperately need at least 15 parent helpers (for our Community) to help marshall and supervise the course. Thank you to those parents who have already offered to help. Those who help will still be able to watch their child run and you do not need to volunteer for the whole day (although you are welcome to, if this is your preference!) If you are able to help, please leave a comment below. Lastly we farewell Jamie as her family moves back to Auckland, and also Genevieve. We wish the girls well at their new schools. Happy holidays and see you back in term 2. Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz

Dear parents & caregivers,
One week to go! Just four school lunches (and one of those could be Subway)! We thought we were all tired last week, but this week has proven beyond a doubt - we are exhausted. A belated welcome to Ethan who started school two weeks ago. Fete thanks Thank you to all those parents and children who helped at our mystery bottle stand. We're not sure yet how much was raised, but will let you know when we have this information. It was lovely to see so many of you at the fete and we know from the children that they were very excited to see their teachers during the weekend. Thank you to those parents who organised donations for the raffles or bottle contents. We have received lots of positive feedback about how enjoyable the mystery bottle stand was. Cross Country Next term we will hold our school-wide cross country. This includes all children in the Kowhai Community, and will be held on Tuesday May 9th (Week 2). We desperately need at least 15 parent helpers (for our Community) to help marshall and supervise the course. So far we have 5 parent helpers across the whole school. Those who help will still be able to watch their child run and you do not need to volunteer for the whole day (although you are welcome to if this is your preference!) If you are able to help, please leave a comment below or see Miss Allchurch next week. Have a great weekend! See you Monday, Thelma, Nicole, Jo, Christina, Louise & Natalie kowhai@westmelton,school.nz Dear parents & caregivers,
Wow - the end of week nine and the end of March already! The term is flying by, and we have certainly noticed some very tired children (and adults!) this week. This week we've been busy with building challenges with Miss Simons and Mrs Brook, playing hockey with Mrs Herring, building catapults with Mrs Sands and preparing for the fete with Miss Allchurch, Mrs Buckenham and Miss Stuart. We were super surprised, excited and just a little overwhelmed when Cam turned up for tool time on Wednesday. Cam brought Andrew (Yvette's Dad) with him, and he also brought all the bits and pieces to make an amazing woodwork table. Wow! A massive thank you to Cam, Andrew and Hornby Mitre 10 for donating the materials for this! We look quite professional with our woodwork now - if you have any building needs, let us know. ;o) There will be a blog post coming soon with photos from how this all went together, and if you haven't seen our table, do have a look - especially at the school logo engraved on the ends. We've also been working away through our normal literacy and maths programmes - no wonder we're tired! Reporting to parents Our teachers have been busy over the last week or two preparing and writing reports for those children who have been at school for two terms, four terms or six terms. These reports will go home at the beginning of week 11 (the last week of term). Please note - not all children will receive a report at this time, only those children marking an 'anniversary'. Our next reporting date will be at the end of Term 2, so if your child does not receive a report this term, it will come at the end of Term 2. For the first three years of school, we provide a written report to parents at 6-month intervals (at the end of term). We report to you 'against national standards' and let you know whether your child is 'below', 'at', or 'above'. At the end of Term 2 there will be a formal opportunity to meet with your child's pod teacher and discuss progress and opportunities to enhance learning. (More on this closer to the time!) As always - if you have any questions (at any time) about your child's learning, please see their pod teacher in the first instance. Mystery bottles for the fete A huge thank you to all of you for your support of our mystery bottle stand for the fete. We really appreciate your generous donations and help with wrapping bottles in preparation for Sunday's fete. Here's hoping the weather is fantastic and we get lots of visitors! We have priced bottles at $2 and $5 for children, and $5 and $10 for adults. Adult bottles are clearly marked, so we don't anticipate any mix-ups! Some of the Kowhai children tried to work out how much money we would raise in total if we sold all the bottles on Sunday. We ran out of fingers and toes (but not bottles!) at around $800. Wow! Thanks to some very generous donations we will be raffling four special (not-so-mystery) bottles. These include three Easter-themed bottles with soft toys and Easter eggs, and a voucher for dining at Baretta. We'll be selling tickets for these raffles from our bottle-stand, and will draw the winners at 1.00 on Sunday. Our thanks must also go to those who have offered to help out with running the bottle-stand on Sunday. Please turn up at the time you have offered to help and we'll make sure you have a job! Headlice In completely unrelated news - please continue to check your child's hair for headlice, and treat if necessary. Thank you for your help to keep on top of this! And that's it for this week! It's looking like an action-packed weekend, with winter sports all kicking into action :o). Daylight Savings begins on Sunday - enjoy the 'sleep-in' (haha). It's April Fools' Day on Saturday, and of course, it's the School Fete on Sunday. We hope to see lots of you at the fete - do drop in and say hello (and buy a bottle or two!)
