Ni Hao Kowhai parents and caregivers!
Welcome to Term 4 - it was lovely to see everybody looking so refreshed and happy after their holiday break. An extra special 'welcome' to Sam L, Carter, Dom, Lachlan, James, Yamato, Jella, Hayley, Piper and Mya who all started school this week. We hope you enjoy your time at West Melton school. And a huge 'welcome' to Ms Berry-Mason (Pam) who has joined the Kowhai teaching team until the end of the year. We are so glad to have you working with us. Pet day Thank you all for your efforts with Pet Day creations. We know that some parents find this quite a stressful time (as do some teachers), but the children have had a wonderful day and it has been lovely to see all the animals and creativity with the craft entries. As part of Pet Day, each child in the school has produced a piece of writing. These are displayed in Learning Communities in the Wharenui (Kowhai's are on the north wall of the Wharenui). Over the next week, please feel free to go and read their writing. The Literacy Team are running a writing competition, and so you are invited to vote for your favourite piece of writing. Voting closes on Thursday (we promise we won't spend 26 days counting votes and deciding a winner), and there will be prizes given! Our apologies to those parents and children who have just joined our Learning Community, and who we inadvertently missed giving Pet Day information to. We are really sorry for the oversight on our part. Communication with school We have a number of ways of communicating with parents about school. This K.I.T. (keeping in touch) notice is written each Friday, and contains information about events and happenings in the Kowhai Community. You will be emailed a link to the notice, and notices from previous weeks are available on our website. Every third week there is a school-wide newsletter. This is sent out as an email attachment from the school office on a Friday. These contain important dates for the whole school, as well as information about school-wide events. Our school website (westmelton.school.nz) contains lots of information about how our school is organised, and has links to background information about our school, and various policies. From time-to-time our school office will also email you with small reminders about various events, or to let you know about bus breakdowns (if your child is on the bus) or 'breaking news' type items! As all of our communication methods rely on email, it's vital that the office have your correct email address. If you know of somebody who is not receiving information from school, please encourage them to check their email address with the school office. We also have various other notices that go home (eg calendar art, school photos, Scholastic Bookclub brochures, notes from the Friends of West Melton School) at different times. As a general rule, these are sent home on a Friday. If your child is away on a Friday and misses a physical notice, we will keep a named copy for them to collect on their next day back at school. Timetable We've made some changes to our timetable for Term 4. Library day is Tuesday for children in Miss Allchurch, Mrs Buckenham and Mrs Sands' pods, and Wednesday for children in Mrs Herring, Miss Simons and Miss Stuart's pods. Our Fab 5 time is now on Thursday from 12-2pm. Fab 5 teachers teach art, drama, PE, music and mindfulness whilst classroom teachers are involved in planning meetings. Your child will bring home a reading book four nights per week - the days may vary each week. Headlice We have had a case of headlice this week. Please check your child's hair and treat accordingly. Please be aware as the weather warms up incidents increase. Therefore we recommend this is a weekly action. Sunhats These are compulsory for term 4. Children without sunhats are required to play in the shaded areas. Also please ensure your child is wearing sunblock each day. Digital technologies community evening The Digital Technology (DT) team are planning for a Community Engagement Meeting to be held on Wednesday 8th November from 7pm - 8pm. We are planning to discuss and gather your thoughts on:
Bird of the year You may already know the Kakii is running for "Bird of the Year". Twice this year you've been asked to cast an important vote. Tegan's mum Tammy is currently involved in the team Kakii campaign. You find out more and vote at www.birdoftheyear.org.nz . Voting closes on Monday so please get voting and encourage your friends to vote for Team Kakii. Dates to note There's quite a lot on this term, and we're sure it will fly by! Here's a few important dates to note: Monday 23 October - Labour Day holiday Wednesday 8 November - Digital Technologies Community meeting Friday 17 November - Canterbury Anniversary Day (Show day) Monday 20 November - Teacher-only day (school closed) You can find all these dates and more on the calendar on our school website.
